Dental Implants: How long is the healing process?

implant dentist Irving TXThe dental implant process is not typically an instant procedure. Just as your teeth took time to develop and grow, it takes time to obtain your replacement teeth. Proper planning and discussion are vital to the success of your replacement tooth. Most importantly, your body must be allowed to heal and bond with the implant. Fortunately, most of this healing occurs below the surface, and dental implant patients can enjoy their normal lifestyles in the process.

During the initial examination, your implant dentist serving Irving TX will determine the amount of healing time necessary for your particular case. Generally, implants are completed in 2-3 phases, and the healing process will be in phases as well.

When the implant is initially placed, a titanium post is inserted into the bone and covered with gum tissue. You should expect mild tenderness in the area for a few days. The gum tissue will protect the implant, and as it heals, it will form a secure bond with your jaw bone. Your implant dentist may recommend a healing period of 4-6 months. During this time, you will be instructed to eat and drink normally, taking special care to keep your mouth healthy and free from gum disease.

After the appropriate healing period, your implant dentist will use local anesthesia to numb the gum tissue that has covered the implant. When the implant has been uncovered, a healing cap will be attached to the implant. This healing cap will remain in place as the gum tissue heals around the newly uncovered post. Again, there may be mild sensitivity for a short period of time. Thorough home care is important to insure proper healing.

When the gums have healed, the healing cap can be removed and your new implant can be fitted with a beautiful crown. The crown will be anchored to the implant through the use of a special attachment called an abutment. At this point, healing is complete and your implant is strong enough for normal biting and chewing.

Although the implant procedure is not typically an overnight process, most of the healing time is dedicated to allowing the implant to bond to the bone; certainly a bond worth waiting for. Why not call our office at 800-616-7972 and plan your appointment today?
